During my tenure at The Weather Channel, I had the privilege of leading the redesign of the Maps and Radar feature within the mobile application for iOS and Android. This project was an invaluable opportunity to deeply understand the diverse needs of users, ranging from casual weather enthusiasts to those relying on real-time updates in life-threatening situations.
One of the first challenges was ensuring compliance with accessibility standards such as WCAG AA and Section 508c, addressing the needs of users with visual impairments, including those requiring high contrast visibility modes or screen readers. Beyond accessibility, performance was a critical focus. We collaborated closely with the development team to optimize data processing, reducing load times and improving the accuracy and responsiveness of the radar feature.
What started as a technical and UX challenge quickly evolved into a passion project, as we recognized the real-world impact of our work. In regions like Tornado Alley, where extreme weather can strike with little warning, a faster, more intuitive experience could literally save lives. This project reinforced my belief in the power of UX design—not just to enhance usability, but to deliver critical, life-saving information in the moments that matter most.
